ELF-0115212_FlaxChiaƒ_OLWe love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Enjoy Life Foods are all certified gluten-free and free of the 8 common food allergens – wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish and shellfish. The foods are produced in a dedicated nut and gluten-free facility. The company was born from an MBA class assignment by the founder Scott Mandell. One has to wonder what grade he got. Today the company produces over 40 different foods. We recently tasted a number of them.

Perky’s Crunchy Flax with Chia Cereal with 200 calories in a ¾ cup serving with 5 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein and 1,000 milligrams of heart-healthy omega-3 fats, was surprisingly excellent. It would be equally good as a snack or served as a cereal or as a topping for yogurt.

Plentils are lentil chips. They look and have the mouth feel of a cheese curl but they are crispier and it is hard to stop eating them. They come in 4 flavors – Dill & Sour Cream, Garlic & Parmesan, Light Sea Salt, and Margherita Pizza. A 1-ounce serving (31 chips) has 130 calories, 6 grams of fat, 1 gram of fiber and 370 to 420 milligrams of sodium, depending on the flavor. Plentils are available in 4-ounce and single-serve 0.8-ounce bags.

In early 2013, Enjoy Life expanded its cereal bar offering with Decadent Soft Baked Bars with 140 calories per bar in 4 flavors – Cherry Cobbler, Chocolate SunButter, Cinnamon Bun (130 calories), and S’mores.

No Nuts! Seed and Fruit Mix is a nice alternative to traditional trail mixes which have nuts, packaged in a 1.63-ounce package with 220 calories.
• Beach Bash – sunflower kernels, pineapple, pumpkin seeds, cranberries and apricots with 6 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber and 75 milligrams of sodium.
• Mountain Mambo – sunflower kernels, pumpkin seeds, raisins, apples, chocolate chips and cranberries with 7 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber and 45 milligrams of sodium.
No Nuts! Seed and Fruit Mix is also available in 6-ounce bags.

Enjoy Life Semi-Sweet Chocolate Mini Chips and Mega Chunks are both dairy, nut and soy free but make a perfect substitute for traditional baking chips in taste, texture and cooking qualities. They are made of 3 ingredients: evaporated cane juice, natural
chocolate liquor (nonalcoholic) and nondairy cocoa butter making them vegan, as well. All Enjoy Life foods are certified kosher (cRc) and halal certified (IFANCA). At this time the halal certification does not appear on the label.
