Bananas Vs. Energy Drinks — Bananas Win!

Get equal performance, more nutrients and pay far less. Yes, energy drinks hydrate but with added caffeine and other stimulating compounds they may also create a diuretic effect. Couple bananas with zero calorie plain water and you still come out ahead.

In a recent study trained cyclists were fed bananas or a sports drink during a 75 kilometer race. Post-race blood samples showed bananas provided the same fuel (calories) for performance while offering superior nutrition which improved recovery. Bananas contain resistant starch which blocks some carbohydrate conversion to glucose that would normally be used as fuel. This forces the body to burn fat stores which help to efficiently fuel muscles during endurance activities such as long bike races.
