We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

In January 2012 we highlighted Jenkins Hell Fire Pepper Jelly. The company has since added three new flavors – Fiery Figs, Passion Fire, and Guava Brava. For those seeking heat, this is the brand for you.

Fiery Figs starts as a sweet fig taste with a low heat that builds to a hot glow. Passion Fire is more hot than sweet which sets the roof of your mouth on fire. Guava Brava is a sweet slow heat that explodes and makes your lips tingle. All three flavors are made from a blend of fruit and 7 fresh peppers with no preservatives, artificial flavors or colors. They are vegan and gluten free. Jelly’s main contribution is taste. With this brand you get taste plus fire. Fiery Figs and Guava Brava have 50 calories per tablespoon and Passion Fire has 45.

Capsaicinoids, the fiery substances that give cayenne, jalapenos, habaneros and other chili peppers their heat, have already been established as active components in rub-on creams for arthritis and pain. Capsaicin also appears to play a role in heart health by lowering cholesterol levels by increasing its breakdown and excretion from the body and helping to lower blood pressure by restricting artery constriction. Heat and health in a jar – worth a try.
