How to Get Kids to Eat Healthy

In a research study 3 to 5 year olds were able to correctly connect foods with brands and restaurant chains because of repeated exposure at home or when eating out. Kids as young as 3 make food choices based on food ads. What do kids want most — foods high in salt, sugar and fat.

Repeated exposure to a food or brand drives preference. Children repeatedly exposed to vegetables, eat vegetables. It may take a number of trials, sometimes as many as 10, but repeated exposure does result in food acceptance. If parents repeatedly expose kids to cookies, French fries and soda, and if these foods are continually available in the house, even very young children quickly learn these are the desirable choices.

Parents need to realize that young children are very aware of what foods available at home and which foods are eaten more frequently. If you want your child to eat well keep healthy foods in the house and be a good role model.
