New in the Market: Orgain Meal Replacement Shakes

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Liquid meal replacements are used for weight control, to help with patient rehabilitation during or after medical treatment, or after a workout as a recovery drink. Orgain a USDA certified organic, ready to drink, meal replacement was developed by Andrew Abraham, M.D. a cancer survivor and a family practice physician.

Many products in this category, though healthy, taste chalky or have an aftertaste. This makes them less likely to be used on a regular basis. Orgain delivers a good taste. The Creamy Chocolate Fudge has a strong chocolate flavor and creamy mouthfeel. Sweet Vanilla Bean is sweeter with a vibrant vanilla taste. We did not sample the third flavor, Iced Cafe Mocha, but assume that it also delivers a good coffee taste. All flavors are packaged in a recyclable, 11-ounce, tetra Pak (drink box) with a shelf life of over a year without preservatives.

Each drink box has 255 calories, 7 grams of fat (no saturated or trans fat), 20 milligrams of cholesterol, 16 grams of protein (organic whey concentrate), 32 grams of carbohydrate, 13 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of fiber (inulin from chicory root). Each flavor is additionally fortified with 24 vitamins and minerals and 50 milligrams of vegetarian DHA. The flavors are sweetened with organic cane juice and brown rice syrup. No artificial flavors or colors are used and all the flavors are gluten free.

Funny you ask because I drink it every morning and I’m pregnant. I don’t see why it would hurt. We’ve had this drink continually stocked in the house for over a year and even before I was pregnant I used to take it as breakfast on the go. The reason we had so much of it was that my mom has been undergoing chemo since 2009 and we wanted something nutritious that wouldn’t make her nauseous and this was it. It also packed a good amount of calories in smaller volume. So we’ve been ordering it on a monthly basis from Amazon for a little over a year now.
