New in the Market: MojoMilk Probiotic Chocolate Milk

We love to try new foods. Some are great. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

MojoMilk is a chocolate milk alternative. It has fewer calories than most brands while providing probiotics. MojoMilk comes in handy single serve packets that are simply added to milk – whole, lowfat or skim. It can also be added to lactose-reduced milk, soy milk or other milk substitutes.

The mix adds only 20 calories, 1 gram of fat, 2 grams of sugar (equal to ½ teaspoon) and 40 milligrams potassium and 40 milligrams of sodium to the calories found in an 8-ounce glass of milk. When added to nonfat milk the entire servings equals 110 calories, far less than a similar size serving found in most other chocolate milk brands.

Beyond the calorie reduction, MojoMilk delivers a healthy amount of probiotics. Why is this important? Probiotics are forms of friendly bacteria that live in our digestive tract and help to strengthen our immune system by protecting us against unfriendly bacteria. Maintaining an adequate amount of friendly bacteria in our gut is critical to good health.

Each serving of MojoMilk delivers 2 billion CFU (colony forming units) of GanedenBC30 (bacillus coagulans), a patented and clinically studied probiotic strain. GanedanBC30 is a very useful strain of probiotics because it is shelf stable and survives during both food processing and digestion. Because our stomachs are very acidic, many of the probiotics added to food do not survive the digestive process in large numbers. Up to 78% of GanedenBC30 survives the journey through the stomach so that it can colonize the lower gut, promoting digestive health and enhancing our natural immune system.

As parents we would prefer that our children drink regular milk. But the sad truth is that milk drinking is declining in this country. By the time kids are preteens, they are drinking more soda than milk. Most kids, however, like chocolate milk and when schools remove this option from the school cafeteria milk consumption plummets. A lower calorie, probiotic-enhanced drink like MojoMilk is a far healthier alternative than soda or sweetened fruit drinks. This product is worth a try.
