We love to try new foods. Some don’t measure up and some become staples in our kitchen. See what you think.

Racconto Essentials Heart Health is a line of heart healthy products that contain natural plant sterols, substances which help lower cholesterol.

Plant sterols, sometimes called phytosterols, are naturally found in some vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. Though they occur in many foods, the amount found in a typical serving is small. Because of this plant sterols are added to foods in amounts that will aid in lowering total cholesterol. Research has shown that consistent use of products with plant sterols can lower total cholesterol by limiting the intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol and can lower the amount of LDL cholesterol produced in the body.

Racconto Essentials Heart Health pasta and sauce both contain 0.4 grams of plant sterols (brand name CoroWise) in a recommended serving (2 ounces of pasta or ½ cup of sauce).

We tried Racconto Essentials Heart Health Rigatoni made with 8 whole grains – whole grain wheat, rye, buckwheat, kamut, spelt, millet, barley, and brown rice. A 2-ounce serving, cooked, had190 calories, 1 gram of fat, 8 grams of protein, 41 grams of carb, 7 grams of fiber, and no sodium. It cooked al dente in 9 minutes. It had a pleasant chewy mouthfeel and mild flavor that would go well with any sauce or ingredients.

We tried Racconto Essentials Heart Health Roasted Garlic tomato sauce. A halfcup serving had 90 calories, 5 grams of fat, no cholesterol, and 430 milligrams sodium. It was a mildly flavored marinara sauce that we served over ready make cheese ravioli. The sauce is also available as Tomato Basil.
